Dwelling in the Word

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Dwelling in the Word is a simple process for reflecting on Scripture as a group. As the text is read aloud, encourage the group to listen for a word or phrase that catches their attention; let them know you will give them a couple minutes after the reading to reflect upon the word or phrase. After a few moments of silent reflection, group members will share with a partner what stood out to them in the reading. Once members have shared with one another, each person will repeat to the group what their partner said. Lastly, the group will have time to discuss any observations and insights that surfaced for them.

STEP ONE

Read the text once or twice:

Loudly—so that all can hear

Clearly—so that all can understand

Slowly—so that all can reflect

Allow a minute or two for silent reflection.

STEP TWO

Each person shares with one other person the word or phrase that stood out to them and why. Allow 5–10 minutes for sharing.

STEP THREE

Each person repeats his or her partner’s response with the entire group.

STEP FOUR

Allow the group to discuss observations and insights they have regarding the Scripture and what has been shared.
