OUR HISTORY

In the 1940s, members of the West Erwin Church of Christ decided to plant a church in South Tyler. That dream came true in 1951. Then in 1997, we continued our ministry to this area when we moved to the corner of Rice Road and Hollytree Drive.

The Glenwood Church of Christ began on July 1, 1951, as a church planting of the West Erwin Church of Christ. The elders purchased lots on West Glenwood in a fast-growing neighborhood. From the first, strong leadership was evident in the eldership. Seven preaching ministers have served Glenwood during her sixty-two-year history. P. D. Wilmeth of San Antonio was the first minister. We are indebted to the early leaders for their vision.

A special love for children has characterized the congregation. For twenty-five years Thursday School provided a day out for mothers while the children were taught and cared for. Little People's School continues to provide quality teaching and experiences for children two through five years old.

forward in faith

The planning, groundbreaking, and moving to the new location on Rice Road and Hollytree Drive were mountaintop events. On July 10, 1997, a “Service of Remembrance” was held at the old building and a “Service of Celebration” was held at 5210 Hollytree Drive. Phase II was completed on July 10, 2005, and provided space for adult classes, a larger chapel, gathering area and other improvements.
